THING of the month
October 2008:
Frog
The origins of this plastic frog are still unknown. It is for sure that he was made in the 1970s and has – according to his nature – a close relationship with water. The slightly carved handle reminds of reptile-like creatures and turns out to be the handle of a watering can. From his large mouth water spreads out of small holes. Temporarily the watering can frog king experiences a renaissance and is even available in a version as frog queen in the flower shops – emancipation does not seem to refrain from Kitsch. The frog king serves as cover model for the first edition of the Querformat magazine. He is rather a symbol for the revaluation of Nippes (another term for Kitsch). Like the distasteful amphibium in a fairy tale turns into a dashing prince, Kitsch and Nippes have currently become largely accepted. This transformation of Nippes is subject of the Querformat magazine. At the oncoming magazine release party at the Werkbundarchiv – Museum der Dinge on october 23rd the frog will leave its showcase and be elaborately celebrated.
