DING des Monats
(THING of the month) December 2008:
Wineglass
About a hundred years ago it used to adorn the dinner table of a wealthy house, today it keeps company with numerous other wineglasses in the collection of the Werkbundarchiv - Museum of Things. Designed by Hans Christiansen in 1902 the glass is decorated with golden stylized roses. The rose has always been a popular motif, but in the time of art nouveau it was particularly trendy. Is it really by chance that the iron banisters in the 1910 studio building by the architects Winkler and Nitzsche which houses the institution show the same motif? Small cast iron reliefs instead of delicately painted gold ornaments are fixed to the iron bars. Contemporary furniture, textiles and ceramic objects also carry this motif. The artistic design of all parts of life was propagated by the reform movement and eventually faces surprising parallels in its realization.
