THING of the month
November 2010:
Butter churn
The term 'butter churn' makes you think of a drum-shaped wooden jar, which is used to produce butter. In contrast to that this glass barrel is part of a machine to produce butter quicker and with less effort. Since the beginning of the 20th century a large diversity of types could be found. By translating a turning motion of a handle the cream is being stirred by the beater and separates butter from buttermilk.
The glass barrel is the most current form of this kind of butter machine, which was an integral part of an average household. Especially in the countryside butter had to be produced at home. Thus preparing sweets and cookies for Christmas time meant hard work for a housewife.
Although producing your own butter has become quite uncommon butter machines are again available as vintage products for individualists.
