THING of the month January 2011: Alarm clock in shape of a mosque

Alarm clock in shape of a mosque

You can hear the tinny call of the muezzin when the programmed waking time has come. The alarm clock in shape of a mosque can be bought in the immediate surroundings of the museum as well as in the net. Probably produced in the Far East this plastic object has widely spread and has a lot of fans. Therefore it was only a question of time until it entered the museum’s collection that presently houses several versions of this alarm clock.

The first one was acquired in 2009 for the exhibition "Böse Dinge" and was shown in the category of devotional kitsch.  (The exhibition is now on show at the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, until July 31st.)

The sample shown here is currently on display in a showcase named "Fremde Dinge?", an artistic research project by Michael Bahr, which will be presented at the Long Night of The Museums on January 29th, at 9 p.m.

Another alarm clock will be exhibited from January 29th until March 27th at the cooperation project exhibition "New in Stock! Migration stories in
Berlin Collections" at Bezirksmuseum Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg for urban Development and social history.
Things tell stories and our thing of the month – the alarm clock in shape of a mosque – has another story to tell.
