Polar Bear
About the museification of polar bears
Animal figurines made of porcelain are very popular. This ashtray with polar bear of the 1930s was a showpiece in a man's study room despite its questionable functionality. And it is an interesting object for a collection of a museum of everyday product culture (purchased for the exhibition
"Packeis und Pressglas / Pack Ice and moulded glass", 1986).
This museification of an polar bear doesn't raise contradiction for animal
lovers. On the other hand the preparation of a loved zoo animal and its inclusion in the collection of a museum of natural history causes ambivalent reactions. Some fans perceive it as an irreverent behaviour.
